From our President
By First Parish, September 22, 2017
Welcome! I am Joe Amster, President of our governing board, I have been a member at First Parish for over 15 years. My family has been enriched in many ways by being part of this congregation and we consider everyone to be part of our extended family.
I am excited for our 300th anniversary. A lot of work has been going into making this event a celebration we will share with each other and the surrounding community. There are still opportunities to help us gear up for it so if you can lend a hand, let me know.
At the Annual Meeting in June we voted to form a task force to review our deficit budget and find ways to increase income and decrease expenses moving forward. This effort is now underway with Laurie Burkhardt, Brian Shoemaker, David Biggers, and Rev. Roger. I look forward to their recommendations.
Over the summer the Parish Committee discussed ways to offset the cost of maintaining our building. To get the momentum started, we voted to move the surplus earnings from last year’s rentals into the Building and Grounds fund. And moving forward, each quarter we will transfer 5% of the rentals income (excluding the cell tower and preschool).
I am happy to have Rev. Roger joins us as our minister. Last year we agreed to seek a contract minister as we go into transition between settled ministers. Rev. Roger comes to us with experience and enthusiasm. This is not a time for us to just coast by and see what happens. We need to make change happen in order to grow and Rev. Roger will help us achieve that. I am planning a leadership retreat with committee chairs and parish board to ensure our vision for growth, religious education, fiscal responsibility, and social action are aligned.
I look forward to working with everyone as we move forward on this journey together.
