Social Action

Social Action at First Parish involves all generations of the congregation, including the children and youth in the Religious Education program and the adults, both with individual causes and in coordinated efforts. Our mission is to coordinate outreach and service activities; provide a forum where congregants can learn about, then act on issues of local, national and global concern; keep congregants updated on opportunities to participate in legislative actions; and live out our seven principles in the context of a social congregation.

Faith in Action

Each month we choose a Faith-in-Action (FIA) recipient. The FIA recipient for the current month is listed on the Happening at First Parish page on this website.

To contribute:

  • During Sunday service, place cash or a check (made out to FPUU-Canton with the FIA recipient name in the memo line) in the beige envelope on the rack on the back of the pew, and put the envelope in the offering plate. or
  • Mail a check (made out to FPUU-Canton with the FIA recipient name in the memo line) to First Parish UU-Canton, 1508 Washington Street, Canton, MA 02021.

Baby Needs Drop off at First Parish

Babies of guest families staying temporarily at UUA Headquarters need the following items:

diapers (disposable, multiple sizes)
baby wipes
baby bottles (new)
clothing, including warm clothing, new only, sizes 0 -3: newborn onesies, hats, socks, sleepers, bibs
high chairs
face cloths
towels
baby wash
diaper cream
crib blankets
receiving blankets

You can drop off items in the Social Justice film room (classroom #2) at First Parish.  Look for the sign on the door and the labeled boxes along the far wall.

Used Clothing Drop off at First Parish

Where:
Shed in back parking lot (on the cemetery side of the church)

What to Drop off:
Used clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, linens, pillowcases, blankets, curtains, and stuffed animals

What Not to Drop off:
Furniture, electronics, household items, books, toys, garbage, pillows, rags, and fabric scraps

Welcoming Congregation renewal

FPUU Canton is presently a UUA Welcoming Congregation. A number of years ago, we engaged in a UUA-specified process to heighten our awareness of our LGBT neighbors and what kind of programs, outreach and acceptance we needed to be welcoming and supportive.

In 2015, the UUA began urging its Welcoming Congregations to renew their support of their welcoming. Now, the UUA has become more emphatic about the need for Welcoming Congregations to be always active and supportive in their welcoming efforts and programs. It is now required, starting in 2019, that Welcoming Congregations perform several renewal steps every year. Failure to do so will mean the loss of this vital certification.

A core group has been formed, as part of the Sweet Spot analysis of several social action initiatives. Peggy, Barbara C., John, and Martha and Dick are the initial members — others are invited to join — just call, email, or at church, connect with us.
